Destination

Welcome to Vars, an emblematic resort perched at an altitude of 1850 metres in the heart of the Hautes-Alpes. Nestling between the Écrins, Ubaye and Queyras massifs, and bordered by larch forests, the resort brilliantly combines Alpine authenticity with modern services. Its privileged location on the Route des Grandes Alpes makes it a choice destination, summer and winter alike.

Winter in Vars: skiing, thrills and exceptional views

Linked to Risoul, the resort forms the vast Forêt Blanche ski area, with 185 km of pistes for all levels. Under the rocky bars of the Eyssina, winter sports enthusiasts enjoy optimum snow conditions thanks to the dry, sunny climate typical of the Southern Alps.
With its renowned snowpark, freeride zones and larch-fringed slopes, Vars is a popular choice for sports enthusiasts and families alike. The resort also offers a wide range of Nordic activities, snowshoe outings and in-resort entertainment.

Summer in Vars: unspoilt nature and wide open spaces

Far from the hustle and bustle, Vars is a haven of peace for hikers, cyclists and lovers of fresh air. Crossed by the Route des Grandes Alpes, it is a legendary stop-off point for bikers and cyclo-tourists. On foot or mountain bike, explore the mountain pastures, panoramic ridges or trails of the Val d’Escreins, a nature reserve nicknamed “Little Canada”.
With over 300 days of sunshine a year, summer in Vars is an invitation to unwind, between high altitude lakes, forests and breathtaking peaks.

A resort with many faces: the districts of Vars

Vars is made up of four charming hamlets:

  • Les Claux (1850 m): the lively heart of the resort, at the foot of the slopes, where SOWELL HÔTELS L’Alpe Blanche** is located
  • Sainte-Marie: historic arrival point of the Tour de France and cradle of the resort
  • Sainte-Catherine and Saint-Marcellin: quieter, perfect for lovers of authenticity and tranquillity.

Each area is linked in season by free shuttle buses, allowing you to discover all the different facets of Vars.
